Everard Read Cape Town presents its summer exhibition, Little Life - a group show featuring a selection of established and emerging artists.
We began this year celebrating 30 years of democracy and the artist as citizen at the vanguard of freedom of expression. It seems appropriate at the end of the year to reinforce the notions of agency and democracy radiating outwards from us as individuals, rather than being imposed from somewhere above.
Our summer show LITTLE LIFE is envisaged as an exhibition that celebrates the modest and fleeting inspirations or nuanced and meditative concepts that catalyze gestures and art making that hint at something larger than themselves. Through being massaged, honed and distilled in studio, these coalesce into nuggets that reveal something essential about life.
We hope to include works that encapsulate the artist’s translation of intimate contemplations into forms in their medium of choice. Artists may interrogate the ostensibly simple or banal and, by re-examining or re-imagining, transform them into somehow profound icons. They can alternatively reduce the profound and complex into something universally intelligible – or make use of any other device that hints at the relationship between contemplation, distillation and art-making.
