Liberty Du’s life has been one long initiation into the divine mysteries; of which, as any teacher, saint or shaman should tell you, the expression of art sits as its highest and most direct transmission. Known as Faith XLVII, and through her graffiti writing moniker Faith47, which brought her from the streets of Cape Town in the late 90s to become one of the most widely recognised street artists in the world, Liberty’s career has been one of contraction (an inward, fine art practice whose mediums nor material know no bounds), to expansion. Her murals span over 30 countries, with an unflinching commitment to social justice and human rights as her distinct motivation. The human experience, as Liberty’s work estimates, is one of continual communion with the possibility of better worlds — dreaming toward more just, more open, anarchical visions of collective life — and a reconciling of the loss in our culture of the sacred, the symbolic, and the felt relationship between self and world.
