PRESS RELEASE

IN MEMORY OF GITHAN COOPOO 1994 - 2025
May 14 – Jul 1, 2025
Everard Read is devastated by the passing of Githan Coopoo.
A uniquely talented sculptor and innovative creator, every aspect of Githan’s life was a testament to his creative expression. His work and character were exemplified by nothing-is-sacred wit and piercing insight into contemporary life, underscored by profound empathy. His no-holds-barred joy in exuberant colour and form delighted his audiences and those who knew him. Moving between humour and tragedy – sometimes serving both at the same time – his work celebrated his own queer, Desi experiences, but also aided in uplifting others and making everyone feel seen.
In addition to sell-out collections of his signature bag and vase sculptures, created out of fragile clay, he worked as a jewellery designer with the iconic Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, Sindiso Khumalo and Athi-Patra Ruga.
His work will be included in the 2026 ‘Here: Pride and Belonging in African Art’ project at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington. The Smithsonian has acquired the work as part of their permanent collection.
Thank you for everything you shared with us, Githan. Your bright and gentle soul will be missed deeply.
