DENBY MEYER: Perspectives
May 7 – May 27, 2025
Perspectives, a solo exhibition by Denby Meyer.
Opening reception: Wednesday 7th May - 6pm
In her latest solo exhibition, Cape Town artist Denby Meyer continues her practice of recording her observations of nature and its seasonal shifts. Her carefully rendered paintings prompt us, in the search for peace in our busy lives, to recall the beauty that surrounds us.
The title of the exhibition, ‘Perspectives’, reflects two facets. The first speaks to Meyer’s compositional choices when depicting scenes of natural beauty in paint – a beach can be viewed from above, with people and waves scattered across the sand, or from the shore, with intense light reflecting off the foaming surf; trees with their branches silhouetted looking up from beneath or at a distance across the incline of a hill.
The result of these technical choices reflects Meyer’s desire to help us shift our own views of the world. “When we observe, we tend to look at the world around us from a standard vantage point,“ says Meyer. “But shift that view and we see things differently. These paintings are about changing perspective.”
An important aspect of this for Meyer is in finding respite from the noise of our surroundings. In recognition of our need for still and quiet, she indulges in an appreciation for the peace that can be found in our surroundings – and helps us to do likewise. This requires awareness of the world we are a part of, and of our place within it. “By understanding our transience in the spaces we inhabit,” Meyer explains, “we can keep perspective of the meaninglessness of the trivial." She goes on to encourage us to change our perspectives so that we can engage more fully with ourselves, each other and the world: “If we don’t try and view the world in new or different ways, there’s no room for discovery – no room for growth.”
