PAST LIVES / NEW WORKS marks Sanell Aggenbach’s 17th solo exhibition – her first with Everard Read Cape Town. It follows a career in which her paintings, whether figurative, botanical or distant cosmic constellations, have developed a distinct language of magic realism. Taking cue from found vintage photographs, her paintings are often of a quiet and intimate nature, rendered in multiple layers of over and under-exposed references. Aggenbach’s monochromatic paintings are seldom lucid, but rather obscured and concealed by either dark blue hues, or sapped of detail and lost in the brightness of bleached ivory white.
The title of the exhibition alludes to a term associated with reincarnation or transmigration. The reference images for this exhibition where carefully selected from photographs she wanted to use in past exhibitions (2004-2024). All in all the underlining mood of global anticipation and unease inform this body of work.
