SASHA HARTSLIEF: A Quiet Life
Oct 6 – Oct 25, 2022
Everard Read Cape Town is pleased to present: A Quiet Life, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Sasha Hartslief.
In this latest collection of paintings, A Quiet Life, Sasha Hartslief continues to delve into the relationship between light and mood. “In my work,” she explains, “l love to contemplate the patterns and shapes of light, and explore how these can resonate in the mind to evoke a sense of familiarity.”
Hartslief is most drawn to depict those quiet and often solitary moments in daily life when we are momentarily freed from the buzz of distraction, and experience the sudden sharp focus of clarity – allowing us to appreciate the beauty in even the simplest of domestic routines.
Stylistically, Hartslief’s depiction of light lends shape and weight to her compositions. Her works reveal her fascination with windows and reflections as artistic devices. “They can create layers of remoteness between the viewer and the subject,” she comments. “This places the viewer outside and at a distance from the moment.” For Hartslief, the view through a window can be a fleeting experience frozen in time, a glimpse into someone else's life or into our own memory, but it remains separated from us by a layer of distance and perhaps nostalgia.
Since 1999, Sasha Hartslief has exhibited regularly at Everard Read, including several solo exhibitions. Passionate about drawing from an early age, Hartslief is largely self-taught. She is currently based in Paarl, in the Western Cape, and continues to attract a broad collector base from around the world
