SHANY VAN DEN BERG: Nōs / Us

PRESS RELEASE

SHANY VAN DEN BERG: Nōs / Us
Apr 7 – Apr 30, 2021

SHANY VAN DEN BERG | NŌS / US | 7 - 30 APRIL

Emerging through a cloud of foliage, Shany van den Berg’s painted forms are swathed in sumptuous floral wraps which the artist has fashioned using thick impasto oil paint in a vibrant palette of pinks, orange and yellows.

In the early months of the pandemic, images of beautiful flowers flooded the internet. The colourful photos, however, told a dark story – millions of flowers had to be destroyed because of the badly affected cut-flower supply chain, with flights grounded and buyers focusing on the essentials rather than luxuries.

Flowers have long been symbolic in the visual languages of fine artists. Shany has used these dumped flower photographs as the starting point for a number of works, to explore the anxieties and devastations of the pandemic, as well as the hope and solidarity.

The interaction between artist, viewer and work is a space to share new ideas and reflections about the past months, emphasised by Shany’s choice of title: Nōs / Us. Beginning with the emotion Shany intends to convey, her placement of each figure and the direction of their almost translucent gaze is built up with layers of drawing, collage and the abstraction of thin oil drips alongside textured impasto petals, within an intimate, dark space.

These works acknowledge the difficulties, desperation and conflicts we face, but also the hope that still blooms within us.
