SIMONE WURZ
(b. 1986, Eastern Cape, South Africa)

Simone Wurz was born on 1 May 1986 in the Eastern Cape. Her family moved to the Western Cape in 1991 and she matriculated with distinction at Somerset West Private School. Wurz went on to graduate with a BA Fine Art degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 2011 and is currently living in the Western Cape, and taking seasonal trips to the Bo-Karoo – situated in the North Eastern Cape.

Drawing as mark making has always fascinated her, especially the pencil which is a very unforgiving medium. In her final year of studies, she started working in water-colour to progress into paintings. The translucence of water-colour as medium, enables the artist to work in layers, meticulously building images to completion.

Wurz portrays glimpses of anonymous people. She delicately documents day-to-day stories and interactions in lifelike water-colour painting. The idea that individuals can be recognised at a distance through gait or manner intrigues her. When viewed at a distance, her subjects optically appear miniscule. This notion is reflected through the small scale of her work.

Wurz has participated in numerous group exhibitions at Everard Read Cape Town
